Drum Lessons in Oakland

Funk, R&B, rock, jazz. Pocket and time feel before flashy fills — the kind of playing that makes a band sound right.

First lesson free · kit at the studio · no commitment

Pocket is the whole point.

Drums aren't about how many notes you can play — they're about locking in a groove that makes everyone around you sound better. Lessons start with feel and time, not flashiness. You'll build basic grooves, develop consistency with a metronome, and learn the listening skills that make musicians want to play with you.

Simon plays drums, keys, and bass — so he understands what drummers need to know to serve the music, not just the mechanics of the instrument.

Drum Lessons FAQ

Do I need my own drum kit?

Not for the trial — a kit is at the studio. To practice at home, a pad and sticks are enough at first; once you're committed, an electronic kit (under $400) or an entry-level acoustic kit will both work. Simon can help you pick what fits your space and budget.

Acoustic or electronic — which should I start on?

Either is fine. Acoustic teaches dynamic control and feel; electronic is quieter (apartments / neighbors) and integrates with production. Most technique transfers between the two. We can play both at the studio, so you don't have to decide before lesson one.

How soon can I play with a band?

Most students can jam with others after 6–12 weeks of consistent lessons. The path is basic grooves first, then time feel, then the listening skills to lock in with a bassist. Band readiness isn't about flashy fills — it's about pocket and knowing when to lay back.
