Guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, drums, keys/piano, trumpet, vocals, and music production. Styles include funk, R&B, jazz, rock, hip-hop, blues, and pop. Every lesson weaves in music theory, ear training, and improvisation so students develop as well-rounded musicians — not just someone who can play a few songs.
Students from age 6 through adults are welcome. Complete beginners, returning players, and advanced musicians all find a home here. Lessons are tailored to each student's age, experience, and goals — whether that's learning your first chord, passing an audition, or finally finishing that record you've been putting off.
Standard lessons are 30 minutes (great for younger kids) or 60 minutes. Some advanced students opt for 90-minute sessions. The right length depends on the student's age, focus, and goals — we'll figure out what works best when we talk.
Absolutely. About a third of students are adults — beginners picking up their first instrument, returning players getting back into it, and experienced musicians looking to level up. Music has no age limit.
In-person lessons take place at the studio in Oakland, CA. Online lessons via Zoom or FaceTime are available for most instruments (guitar, bass, keys, vocals, production) depending on your setup and level. Reach out to discuss which format works best for you.
For a trial lesson, nothing — instruments are available at the studio. For ongoing lessons, having your own instrument at home to practice on is essential. You don't need to spend a lot: a decent beginner guitar or keyboard can be found for $100–$200, and I'm happy to help you pick something appropriate for your budget. Drums students benefit from a practice pad between sessions. Bring enthusiasm and you're set.
Fill out the contact form on the homepage or email simonoto@gmail.com. I'll get back to you within 24 hours to schedule a free 30-minute trial lesson. After that, we'll set up a regular weekly time slot.
Cancellations with at least 24 hours notice are rescheduled at no charge. Late cancellations (under 24 hours) or no-shows are charged at the full lesson rate. Life happens — occasional exceptions are made for genuine emergencies, but consistent last-minute cancellations affect other students' scheduling.

Yes — The Groove Ensemble brings students together to play as a band. Members rehearse weekly, perform at real gigs, and develop the collaborative skills you can only learn by playing with other people. Ensemble membership is open to students who are ready to play with others. Ask about eligibility during your trial lesson.
