Real-time playing through Jamulus

For lessons where we actually need to play together — jazz improv, ensemble work, jamming — we use Jamulus, a low-latency audio platform that lets us trade phrases and lock in like we're in the same room. Free, open-source, takes a few minutes to set up.

Instruments & Disciplines

Most instruments translate well to video. Here's how each one works remotely — rated honestly.

🎸

Guitar

Acoustic and electric. Technique, chord voicings, lead, and songwriting all work great on video.

🎸

Bass

Groove, fingerstyle, slap, and theory. A simple clip-on tuner and your setup is all you need.

🥁

Drums

Electronic kits or practice pads work well. Acoustic kits can have latency — we'll figure out what works for your setup.

What Happens in an Online Lesson

Online lessons follow the same structure as in-person — just with you in your room instead of the studio. Here's what a typical session looks like.

01

Connect & Check In

We open the call, get your audio and video sorted, and you play me something — a scale, a riff, last week's assignment. Quick diagnostic, no pressure.

02

Warm-Up & Review

Technical exercises and a review of what you practiced. Consistency is what builds real ability — this is the foundation of every session.

03

New Material

New techniques, songs, or theory — clearly taught and demonstrated on camera. I can share my screen for charts, notation, or backing tracks.

04

Theory & Ear Training

Woven throughout every lesson. You'll understand why things work — not just copy patterns. Ear training develops your musical instincts.

05

Play & Explore

Time to try things out, improvise, or ask questions. The lesson is yours — we go where the music takes us.

06

Practice Plan

Every student leaves with a specific weekly assignment — accessible in the student portal so you always know exactly what to work on.

What You Need

You don't need a recording studio. You just need the basics.

  • Your instrument — whatever you're learning on. An acoustic instrument, electric with amp, or a digital instrument all work fine.
  • A device with a camera — laptop, tablet, or phone. Position it so I can see your hands and your face clearly.
  • Reliable internet connection — standard home broadband is plenty. Wi-Fi is fine; wired is better if you have it.
  • A reasonably quiet space — doesn't need to be perfect, just somewhere you can focus and I can hear you play.
  • Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Meet — your choice. We'll confirm the platform before the first lesson.
Not sure if your setup will work? Just reach out before booking — I'll tell you honestly what will and won't translate well to video, and help you figure out what (if anything) you need to adjust.
