Groove School

One groove a week, played for real, with a working funk musician in your ear. Bass, drums, guitar and keys. Max 8 players.

First group starts Saturday Dec 12. The list hears first.

What a Saturday looks like

  1. I play the groove.

Where it sits, what each instrument owes the pocket, where the space is.

  2. You all play it.

Everyone against the same track, muted on your end, so you can go for it.

  3. I coach you, one at a time.

You unmute, I tell you exactly what to fix. Everyone else hears it too, and that's half the lesson.

  4. You leave with the practice material.

Track, part, one thing to work on. Miss a week and you still get it.

60 minutes. Online. Saturday afternoons inside 1 to 4pm Pacific (4 to 7 Eastern). The exact hour gets set with the founding group.

Ready is simpler than you think

If you can play a simple part along with a record or a click, keep your place most of the time, and jump back in when you get lost, you're ready. No reading, no solos, no prepared piece.

Adults only. Bass (electric), drums, guitar and keys.

Still learning to hold the instrument or keep a steady beat? Start with a private lesson. Those come with a free trial.

Be in the first group

The first Groove School group is the founding cohort. You help set the hour, you pick some of the first grooves, and you get first claim on your seat when the next group opens.

8 seats. If 4 people are in, we start.

$100 per live session

Billed monthly. Nothing to rebook, stop any month.

Getting in starts with a quick 30-minute groove audition with Simon ($20). It's a hang, not a test: we play a little and make sure the class fits you. The $20 covers the meeting, not a guaranteed seat.

Taught by a working funk musician

Simon Keyser Petty is a bandleader, producer and multi-instrumentalist on the Bay Area funk and soul scene, and Jazzschool faculty at the California Jazz Conservatory, where he leads funk ensembles. Band coaching, not lessons.

Questions

You need to hold a simple part with a recording. That's it.

Not at the same time, nobody can (internet lag). So everyone plays muted against the same track, and I coach players one at a time. It works, and you play most of the hour.

You still get that week's practice material. A heads up 24 hours ahead helps.

Your instrument, headphones, and a camera that can see your hands. I'll send setup tips before the first session.

Funk and soul, the real records. Founders pick some of the first grooves.

This one is adults only. For younger players, see Groups and Ensemble in the menu.

One hour a week that's just for playing.

First group starts Saturday Dec 12. The list hears first.
